QUALITY CRAFTSMANSHIP

Stone MASONRY work, carried out to the highest standard.

Lime has been used as a building material for centuries and is key in helping to protect brick and stone buildings from the ravages of weather and time. In addition to its aesthetic values, lime provides a more sympathetic and durable alternative to cement, allowing buildings to breathe and better accommodate movement over time.
I offer all types of traditional limework for period properties including lime pointing and restoration. Stone restoration can be labour intensive but ultimately, highly rewarding.
This process involves cleaning, resurfacing and pointing which once completed will return stone to it’s full glory. The end result will be to reveal the original colour and texture of the stone face.

Repointing is the process of renewing the pointing, which is the external part of mortar joints, in masonry construction. Over time, weathering and decay cause voids in the joints between masonry units, usually in bricks, allowing the undesirable entrance of water. Water entering through these voids can cause significant damage through frost weathering and from salt dissolution and deposition.

With years of experience in the stone repair and restoration. Rafal has the experience and Skills, experience and knowledge to sympathetically restore, repair and enhance damaged or decayed stone work.
lime is hygroscopic and also highly vapour permeable; allowing moisture to evaporate at sufficient rates to help buildings manage dampness.

Common causes of stone masonry failure include incompatible materials being placed beside one another, inadequate weathering protection, and poor quality masonry repairs. The use of hand mortars in re-pointing is a common cause for stone deterioration. External stonework often requires stone cleaning in order to adequately identify concealed defects. Once diagnosed, various methods can be adopted depending upon the type of stone masonry and the extent of the decay.

Lime Pointing.
We begin by removing your existing defective stone mortar, brush area to ensure it is dust and debris free.
Apply the lime motar by hand using pointing keys. Leave the mortar to cure/dry. Then finished in a smooth or rustic finish of choice, to match the existing finish. The pointing in stonework is the mortar that sits between the pieces of stone and binds and holds the wall together. With the passing of time all stone buildings and walls will need repointing.
